Validity period of right to drive

The right to drive remains valid until the driving licence holder turns 70 (permanent right to drive). After this, the right to drive will be valid for a period at the discretion of the police, which may not exceed five years at a time. The right to drive a bus and a lorry, on the other hand, will be granted for a maximum of two years at a time. The right to drive a bus granted for two years only entitles the holder to operate a bus without passengers, and a right to drive a heavy vehicle combination only entitles the holder to operate a vehicle combination of this type without a load. The right to drive can be granted without restrictions as to passengers and load, however, if a favourable opinion of a doctor specialising in geriatrics on the applicant's driving ability is attached to the application.

The right to drive a car is initially granted only for two years (short-term right to drive), unless the licence holder has held either a Finnish-issued car driving licence (other than a short-term one) for at least six months or a driving licence issued abroad that has been valid for an equivalent period and entitles the holder to drive a car in Finland.
