EU affairs

The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for the national preparation and monitoring of EU home affairs. Decisions concerning EU home affairs cooperation are taken at the Council of the Justice and Home Affairs Ministers. At the Council, Finland is represented by Minister of the Interior Anne Holmlund, Minister of Migration and European Affairs Astrid Thors and Minister of Justice Tuija Brax.

The Ministry of the Interior also takes part in fostering cooperation within the EU civil protection mechanism and other international cooperation in the field of civil protection. In addition to the EU, the Ministry cooperates with the neighbouring regions and the UN and its suborganisations, and is involved in NATO's Partnership for Peace programme.

The Ministry of the Interior is also the authority responsible for managing the European Refugee Fund, the Fund for the Integration of Third-country Nationals, the European Return Fund and the External Borders Fund in Finland.
