Programme period 2001-2006
Results of programme period I of the Regional Centre Programme:
- urban area actors are more conscious than before of the responsibility for generating vitality in their region.
- municipalities taking part in the programme have increased their goal-orientated cooperation
- municipalities have intensified their strategic cooperation especially in business politics and service development
- municipalities have strengthened the regional cooperation base by reciprocal agreement and have organised and renewed cooperation structures
- private and public sector actors have made the expertise base more effective with their strengthening cooperation networks
The gap in the rate of development between different urban regions has narrowed. Job opportunities have increased in the regional centres, especially in the largest, faster than in other parts of the country. Along with the large urban regions, adjacent small regional centres and medium-sized provincial centres have grown. The number of regional centres exhibiting an increase in population rose from eleven to seventeen.
